Leaf House Scientific was founded in 2017 to give formal shape to a lifelong fascination with insects and other arthropods, and to express that fascination through work that is both rigorous and beautifully made. What began as a draw towards the hidden lives of small animals has become a sustained effort to reveal their complexity, beauty, and biological importance.
Meet the Team
Ryan Garrett
Ryan Garrett is a myrmecologist, videographer, and consultant with over 15 years of experience in invertebrate research and husbandry. He led the permanent leafcutter ant exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History, and his work has appeared in award-winning productions including BBC’s Green Planet. His research has been published in Royal Society Open Science, Scientific Reports, and other leading journals.
Cherry Dorrett
Cherry is a director of production with more than 30 years of experience across the film industry. She manages licensing and contracts for Leaf House Scientific, bringing deep production knowledge, calm oversight, and exceptional organizational skill to the team.
Todd Gardner
Todd brings 25 years of expertise in metal fabrication across industrial and artistic applications, with specialties in CAD design, welding, and precision machining. His work ranges from nuclear sorting facilities to large-scale sculptural monuments.
Dr. Robert Schofield
Dr. Robert Schofield is a physicist at the University of Oregon whose research spans gravitational waves and biomaterials in invertebrates, including the heavy metals found in leafcutter ant mandibles. An inventive problem-solver, he has been a longtime collaborator at LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory), where his work contributed to the Nobel Prize–winning detection of gravitational waves. He is also an invaluable resource to our own scientific work.
